Usually we (consultants, donors, executives, I/NGOs, country representatives etc) focus on budget, plans, strategies, goals, reports, research or evaluation, other technicalities and tangibles while dealing with project/s. But in the process, we miss the very ingredient that actually makes a project successful. It is called enthusiasm, (and or energy of person). It is mental, spiritual and intangible in nature. But it is fundamental to success, and determines whether a project is going to be successful or not. It is invisible. But you can sense “enthusiasm” when you talk to people or when you go to visit an organisation.
The good news is that now there are tools to measure them. Or you can set your own indicators calling it – Conditions of Satisfaction. For examples- When you go to an organisation- you can feel their enthusiasm (energy) as soon you enter, by the way receptionist receives you, the way you are treated, number of times staff smile, or the way they make presentation. Let’s review and reflect if that ingredient is missing in our life or project that we deal with. The whole nation seems to lack it, often indicated by the way people talk in the meeting or party or at home.
We, from developmental sector should use it as one of the most important criteria while selecting or evaluating a project or selecting an executive / officers for our office. Or we can give serious thought about maintaining that in our own office culture, field, home, schools everywhere, and in teaching, leading, consulting and managing. That is how we can help increase enthusiasm.
